WHERE CAN A PROFESSIONAL STAND ON? JOB OR CAREER?

What Is More Important To The Professional? To Find A Job Or Career?

By Peter John (Dribble da mania)

As usual in Daraja la Ajira Tanzania social platforms, we discussed the difference between job and career and the importance of a job or career. We both argued that a Job is a salary-based activity with no long progression of the academic profession rather than a career. Since our environments, especially when one is a fresh graduate might find difficulties dealing the career road than jobs.

Let’s take a deeper look at the difference between these two commonly associated terms.

WHAT IS A JOB?

A job is something you simply do for the money. Usually, jobs have a small impact on future resumes because they aren’t typically related to what your career is or will be. Also, jobs usually offer fewer networking opportunities because your coworkers often won’t be continuing on to the same field as you in your future career.

Most jobs consist of hourly wages, are more short-term, and focus on getting a task done.

That’s not to say that jobs aren’t valuable. Jobs show your work ethic, which is important to future employers, and money pays the bills! Jobs can help prepare you for a career by providing you with valuable skills like time management and communication.

WHAT IS A CAREER?

A career is all about building up skills through various employment opportunities, giving you the ability to move on to higher-paying and more prestigious ones. Careers provide a foundation of experiences that help fuel your professional life for many years.

Careers are more long-term and are about learning, gaining experience, building connections, and putting yourself in the right position for promotions and raise. Also, careers tend to be more salary-based, as opposed to hourly-based jobs, and often include benefits such as paid time off and healthcare.

While more education is often required for a career, you don’t need to spend the rest of your life in school just to get ahead. South College offers many associate degree programs that can be completed in just two years, getting you started on your new career before you know it.

STOP THINKING BIG, IF YOU DONT VALUE SMALL

Article by Mr. Peter John ( DAT President)

I am publishing this article with an abundance of experience from most job seekers in Tanzania. Of course, the rate of unemployment in Tanzania is relatively low in relation to other sub-Sahara African states whereas according to statista.com it has been approximated to 1.98% in 2020. From the observation of our unemployment status, It would be even better if some class of job seekers could understand the meaning of employment,

Most of the fresh graduates' job seekers find it difficult to grab their dream job in the short run and find themselves be jobless in the long run which is a disadvantage for their career journey. Their problems begin at the college and universities where a big number is dramatized to be employees of large trending corporates which are commonly small in the job market as soon as they graduate from college. It is the maneuver of academician to get a job in a better place, but it depends on the environment, time and demand we are passing through at the golden generation, the rapid changes which have been taking place to the industries due to numerous factors like an emergency of COVID 19, etc shall it favor both of you?

If your response is no let's proceed, but if yes you have no reason to continue reading this article. You should start to understand to value whatever the small opportunities which shall be available in the job market. There a lot of small and medium-scale firms looking for the right people to work with but unable to find one due to the fact they are small compared to the big picture of the job seekers, right? Yes, I have seen the behavior in Tanzania whereby graduates tend to ignore small firms, and more than 90% could quit just after one month and tend to proceed to search for the large firms, and in the end, they lose everything about their destiny.

The art of choosing a place to work, office environment, director profile, etc lies to the freshest graduates in Tanzania. The simple fact is the supply of labor is higher than demand and this simple fact should be understood by the freshest graduates in 21 century. Others may prefer being volunteers in a large(mostly known) firm in the city than being paid a common salary from the small firm, this is amazing. Being part of any project either successful or failed is a wise decision than staying idle. If you will value small things, you can find most of the small and medium firms got CONNECTIONS, FIELD EXPERIENCE, and OPPORTUNITIES that can be a bridge to your dream large company if you can stay loyal.

For any fresh graduate reading this one in a million articles, do not miss any opportunity of being employed to the SME firms because of its importance in your career. You don't have a job, in the long run, you can find yourself in a trap of a long career/employment gap that can not be filled and therefore no excuse for an employer to delete your application. If you are still thinking big and disobeying SMEs opportunities then you are in danger of never being employed because most of the Corporate/Multinational business look for candidates with Accomplishment has driven Cv rather than duties and responsibilities factor,

Have you ever ask yourself a question like "Where can you testify my competence and ability?" The SME firms can give you that chance when are ready to employ you in a suitable position. Its time to show how you can value small tasks and turn them into big entities, it's your time to turn the local auditing firm into a large corporate auditing firm, as a marketer you have a chance to turn a local restaurant franchise into an international, get the local marketing safari firm into global dimensions, you are journalist its time to let the local youtube channel to reach 1 million viewers and the list goes on for a variety of professionals around there.

In conclusion, I am interested to give you a long story of a friend that lost a chance to be employed by a large banking institution in Dar es Salaam, due to the discipline issues that occurred when she was working with an SME firm between him and the director, bad luck she met with the director of the firm on the panel table for the oral interview. Can you guess what happened next? My best advice to both fresh graduate and experienced job seekers is to give a chance and respect the chances available to work with the SMEs because the future it's not all about being an employee but a strategic partner to the owner of the company. Just take care if you are among the bachelor, masters, or Ph.D. holders who classify jobs basing on your status, stats show most of the certificate, diploma holders and beyond might compete for those with bachelor, etc simply because of massive automation of jobs and experience curve whereby most of professional with low certification are ready to join the earlier process at any point of entry.
